We would like to highlight an upcoming session at AOGS 2026 that may be of interest to the UK solar and space plasma physics community:
ST29: Linking Plasma Dynamics in the Lower Solar Atmosphere to Magnetic Activity
The Sun exhibits a wide range of magnetic activity (flares, atmospheric heating, and the solar wind) ultimately rooted in dynamo processes beneath the surface. While photospheric magnetic fields have been observed for decades, magnetic structuring and plasma dynamics in the lower solar atmosphere (chromosphere) remain comparatively poorly constrained, limiting our understanding of key problems such as flare triggering, coronal heating, and solar wind acceleration.
Solar observations are now entering a golden era. New and upcoming facilities, including DKIST, CLASP2, SUNRISE-III, and the forthcoming SOLAR-C mission, are providing unprecedented access to fine-scale magnetic fields and plasma dynamics from the photosphere through the chromosphere and into the corona. Together, these data open new opportunities to study magnetic coupling, small-scale dynamo action, and plasma responses such as flows, jets, and waves across the solar atmosphere.
This session invites contributions from observational, numerical, and theoretical perspectives that address magnetic fields and plasma dynamics from the solar surface to the lower atmosphere, and their connection to coronal and solar-wind phenomena. The aim is to bring together experts in high-resolution observations, simulations, and analytical modelling, while fostering discussion and collaboration across solar and space plasma physics. The session will also provide a welcoming forum for early-career researchers and PhD students.
