Call for abstracts: UKSP/MIST joint session

Abstract submission is open for a joint UKSP-MIST session for NAM 2013, scheduled for Thursday 4th July. The session will consist of invited talks by Shadia Habbal (University of Hawaii) and another speaker. We particularly encourage presentations of new research by PhDs and PostDocs. Please submit your abstracts at http://www.nam2013.co.uk/, or contact the organisers for more details.

Session 5: Initiation of the quiescent and dynamic solar wind and its evolution through the heliosphere (UKSP+MIST)

Organisers:
Huw Morgan – Aberystwyth University
Richard Harrison – Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Jackie Davies – Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Xing Li – Aberystwyth University
David Long – Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL
Andrew Walsh – ESA/ESTEC

Myriad instruments (including EUV and heliospheric imagers, coronagraphs, spectrometers, radio antennae and particle detectors) are routinely used to observe quiescent and dynamic solar wind features both at source and as they evolve through the heliosphere. Despite this, the exact nature of the physics governing this evolution remains elusive, with the relationship between the observed characteristics of the feature in the low corona and its physical properties as measured in-situ continuing to be a source of much investigation. This session aims to place new and important constraints on models of their initiation, propagation and evolution using the wide variety of observational data currently available. This increased understanding of the link between remote-sensed features and the resulting in-situ signatures will not only aid in predicting the geospace response to eruptive events from coronal observations but will also help maximise the science return from the forthcoming Solar Orbiter mission.
