Call for session proposals for Spring MIST 2011

Message from the MIST mailing list.

Dear MIST colleagues,

As discussed at the MIST business meeting in Glasgow in April, Spring MIST 2011 will be combined into the 2011 National Astronomy Meeting. We are now working on the scientific programme, which includes capacity for a substantial set of MIST sessions (~15 hours). We discussed this at last week’s MIST Council meeting. We would like the bulk of the sessions to driven by the interests of the community, so I would like to invite you all to propose topics for these sessions. So if you would like to propose topics, please email them to me by 31 August – and include the following information:

A. proposed session title
B. short abstract (say 200 words)
C. proposed convenors
D. proposed duration of the oral session – 75 mins or 150 mins.

Proposals for multi-disciplinary sessions are most welcome – linking with UKSP to look at issues of joint solar/STP interest – and linking with the wider astronomy community to look at joint interest in areas such as plasma astrophysics and exo-planets.

MIST Council identified some possible topics:
A. the rise of Solar Cycle 24 and its implications for space weather (joint withUKSP)
B. missions forum (joint with UKSP)
C. a substantial MIST open session
So we will fold these into the planning alongside your proposals. Comments on  these topics are welcome.

As you may know NAM 2011 will take place at the Venue Cymru conference centre in Llandudno during the week running up to Easter. Sessions will run from the Monday morning (April 18) to Thursday lunchtime (April 21). Registration will open on Sunday 17th. Please mark these dates in your diary.

For more information, see the RAS web page at

For reference, the 2011 EGU meeting is two weeks earlier (3-8 April).

Best wishes,
Mike Hapgood
