IET’s second Solar Storms seminar scheduled for 30 April

Following a successful seminar last year, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) have scheduled their second Solar Storms seminar for 30 April, to be held at IET London: Savoy Place.

The day will bring science and business together to debate and discuss the challenges of solar storm forecasting to culminate in engineering solutions that can withstand the effects of solar storms.

Key topics for discussion include

• A presentation of the Royal Academy of Engineering study into the engineering effects of extreme space weather
• Insights into ground based system vulnerabilities from studying the space weather impact on power grids
• The effects of solar storms on system critical control devices and GNSS related railway applications
• Estimating the neutron component of extreme ground level events
• Tools to help you plan your protective measures

Who you will hear from

• Keynote speaker and Chair: Professor Mike Hapgood, Head of the Space Environment Group, RAL Space
• James Kimmance, Head of Risk Management, Parsons Brinkerhoff
• Alison Richards, Met Office
• Dr Chris Frost, Neutron Irradiation, STFC, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
• Dr Sally Leivesley, Newrisk Ltd
• Graeme Taylor, Principal Research Scientist, NPL
• Dr Alan Thomson, Head of Geomagnetism, British Geological Survey
• Jianhong Jin, Control-Command and Signalling Engineer, Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB)
• Keith Ryden, Reader in Space Engineering, University of Surrey
