Dear colleagues,
Abstract submission for COSPAR 2026 is now open, and we are organizing Session D1.3. Details of the session are provided below.
Abstract: Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events pose significant risks to space weather and human space exploration, necessitating advanced understanding and prediction methods to mitigate their impacts. This session will discuss recent advancements in SEP research, covering observations, modeling, and data analysis. Key topics include the mechanisms behind SEP acceleration and their transport through turbulent solar wind. The session aims to explore methods for forecasting SEP occurrence and their properties (e.g. duration and intensity) and enhancing space weather prediction capabilities. We seek contributions from modeling and observational studies that focus on advancing our understanding on the initiation of SEP events by solar eruptions, their acceleration and transport, as well as studies that improve our ability to predict their occurrence and impact at Earth and throughout the heliosphere. The Session will welcome presentations on particle acceleration mechanisms, SEP modeling in the corona and inner heliosphere, multi-spacecraft observations, and innovative prediction approaches, including physics-based, data-driven, and machine learning techniques. The goal is to foster scientific collaboration to better understand, predict and mitigate SEP events.
We solicit contributions related to:
• Acceleration of particles to space weather relevant energies. The relative role of flare-related and shock-related acceleration processes.
• (Modeling) acceleration in the corona and the inner heliosphere.
• Multi-spacecraft observations of SEP events across the heliosphere (Helios, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, BepiColombo, L1, Mars and beyond)
• (Modeling) Particle transport in the corona and across the heliosphere
• (Modeling) Prediction of the occurrence of SEP events, at Earth and across the heliosphere.
•(Modeling) Prediction of the SEP characteristics and the evolution of the SEP time profile
