The Theme of the Session:
The solar chromosphere is the dynamic interface between the interior and the corona, and is composed of a wealth of structures, from fibrils, spicules, mottles, and magnetic bright points with scales approaching – or possibly below – the current diffraction limit (70km), to large objects such as prominences and filaments which can have scales of a solar radius. The radiative losses of the chromosphere dwarf those of the corona making chromospheric heating even more challenging than coronal heating, and chromospheric emission also dominates in the flare radiative energy budget, and provides many flare diagnostics. The considerable challenges associated with understanding the chromosphere have motivated high resolution imaging and imaging spectroscopy observations – from state-of-the-art ground-based telescopes to the upcoming launch of the IRIS mission – as well as rapid recent progress in sophisticated 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations. These recent advances, and the associated renewed interest in the chromosphere, motivate this UKSP session.
