PhD Open Day at Culham, 15 November 2012

Culham Laboratory Open Day

http://www.culhamphd.org.uk/

Culham Laboratory includes 2 tokamaks, MAST and the world’s largest Joint European Torus, JET. Much of the programme now is leading to the next generation super tokamak ITER being built in the south of France due to be fully operation in the 2020’s.

The options for PhD work include plasma physics – theoretical, computational and experimental. But also many other disciplines involved in the diagnostic techniques used – lasers, spectroscopy and atomic physics, magnetic and electric field instrumentation, particle detectors, bolometry, polometry, Thomson Scattering, neutral beam injection, rf heating and emission analysis across wide range of the em spectrum.

There is a lot of overlap with space physics including the potential to process both – eg. Pellet injection in tokamak/cometary physics.

This day is an opportunity for both students and supervisors to discuss potential cross with staff at Culham potential projects.
As the Space representative on the IoP Plasma Physics Group Committee – I am happy to lend any assistance if required.

Culham laboratory is near Oxford about 10 mins away from Rutherford Appleton Lab and has a direct train link on the Oxford-London main line.

The website is at http://www.culhamphd.org.uk/
Please:
a) Confirm whether you are coming and also give the names and emails of any of your colleagues who are coming. Anyone coming will need to bring ID

b) Say whether you would like space for literature and/or a poster. Those who’ve been before know we provide a table, chair, poster board and power for a laptop

Please reply to Martin O’Brien (Martin.Obrien@ccfe.ac.uk) and Lynda Parker (Lynda.Parker@ccfe.ac.uk).

Many thanks

Martin
