The Principles Governing Appointments
The Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life laid down a set of principles concerning appointments to public bodies. Although the full impact of these principles strictly applies only to the selection procedure for members of its Council, STFC considers that the spirit of the Nolan recommendations should also be applied to its main advisory panels and peer review committees with influence over decisions on funding.
Panel members
Members of the Challenge Led Applied Systems Programme Panel will be drawn from industry, STFC, other relevant organisations and the scientific community and will represent the sector challenge areas for Challenge led calls (currently addressing the areas of Medical, Security, Energy and the Environment).
The Challenge Led Applied Systems Programmes Panel will comprise a minimum of 9 members. It will be chaired by Dr Trevor Cross (E2V) and will represent the remit of STFC’s External Innovations team.
Candidates for membership can be nominated or co-opted and will normally be appointed for a period of three years. Nominated candidates will be expected to provide information (on one side of A4) on the following to assist the selection process.
• The nominee’s scientific areas of research and interests;
• The nominee’s qualities, including academic/industrial background knowledge of the committees subject area;
• Nominee’s experience of serving on STFC (formerly PPARC) and non-STFC committees;
• Any possible conflict of interest;
• Justification as to nominee’s suitability to sit on the suggested committee.
It would also be useful if contact details for the nominee were provided, together with details of their current position and an indication of their status/seniority.
