Help Support the SDO Mission – Please Respond to the User Inventory Request

Dear All,

As you may be aware, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission is currently under serious threat due to U.S. budget constraints. To support the continuation of this vital mission, Dr. Shea Hess Webber is compiling a global inventory of ongoing projects and facilities—including public outreach and education initiatives—that actively download and use SDO data on a regular basis (i.e., not just one-time archival usage for individual papers, but continuous or periodic usage in ongoing work).

If this applies to your activities, please send your response directly to Dr. Shea Hess Webber shessweb@stanford.edu

Also, we encourage you to forward this request to any colleagues or institutions who may be using SDO data. The more complete the inventory, the stronger the case for sustaining the mission.

Thank you for your support!

Letter from Dr. Shea Hess Weber :
Hey folks,

We’re trying to put together an inventory of SDO data users. We don’t need to
know those who download things for particular science papers (ADS does that for
us), but we are interested in those who regularly get data for other purposes —
things like space weather forecasting, citizen science, public displays, running
models, etc. The thought is that this will help NASA and others better
understand the large impact that SDO data has in addition to the hundreds of
science papers published each year. The broad categories are:
* Community/public collaboration/information: museums/broader impacts
* Modeling, visualization, augmented data
* Space weather forecasting
* Science planning (e.g. Solar orbiter, Hinode, DKIST)
* Commercial / Public Sector
* Also: Remote DRMS sites

Our Ask: For each SDO User item, we’d like to identify at least some of these:

1. the purpose (e.g. the XXX model),
2. a point-of-contact,
3. an organization name,
4. very short description of use,
5. data products used,
6. link (if available),
7. comments,
8. trigger for notification (e.g. 4 hours without data).
It’s more important to be thorough in our collected inventory than to get all of
the details.

If you can take a few minutes to reply to me with some (or all) of this
information, that would be extremely useful for the SDO Team.

Feel free to share with others and have them send me details as well, especially
in communities where I don’t have as strong of a network (like in the military
and commercial sectors). Know someone who was impacted by the JSOCalypse flood?
Point them in my direction!

Thanks to everyone for your help on this.
Shea
