Royal Society Talk by Dr Alan Title

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) – Ground-Breaking High
Resolution Imaging of our Star

Dr Alan Title
Principal Investigator of the AIA instrument aboard SDO
Professor of Physics, Stanford University and
Senior Fellow, LM Advanced Technology Center

19:30, Tuesday 14th of September

Kohn Centre, The Royal Society, London

Dr. Title is a Professor of Physics at Stanford University and a Senior Fellow at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center. His research interests are the nature of the Sun’s magnetic field, its origins, and its effects on the Heliosphere. He has played a leading role in the development of optical instruments for use on the ground and in space, and has been a major player in space missions such as TRACE, SOHO and Hinode. Currently he is the Principal Investigator for the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). One of his main interests is demonstrating the science and beauty of the Sun. Dr. Title is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the International Academy of Astronautics.

In this talk, Dr Title will show some of the ground-breaking, new high resolution imaging of the Sun provided by the SDO mission which was launched in February this year. The new chapter in high resolution imaging of our star has coincided with an upturn in solar activity, providing unprecedented views of the nature of our Sun’s atmosphere and its impacts on the Earth.

The talk will be given at 19:30 on Tuesday the 14th of September, in the Kohn Centre at The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG.

This event is free. Tickets in advance only – on a first come, first served basis. If you wish to attend, please contact: Jenny Dallimore at Jenny.Dallimore@stfc.ac.uk or 01235445618.
