Carrington Events

Dr Hugh Hudson
University of Glasgow and UC Berkeley

Date: 10:00 (BST) 13th May 2021

Abstract: We often cite the Carrington flare (SOL1859-09-01) as an extreme flare/CME/geostorm event and a prototype “superflare.” I discuss the original observations in the context of what we now know about solar and stellar flares. Although not an extreme event in the sense of being truly exceptional, it has become clear that the Carrington flare turned into a milestone in what we now call “multimessenger astronomy.”
