UKSA Support for UK student attendance at the Solar Orbiter Summer School

UKSA Support for UK student attendance at the Solar Orbiter Summer School, L’Aquila, Italy, September 22-25, 2014

Dear MIST and UKSP colleagues:

Hopefully many of you will have seen previous notices and are aware that the 1st Solar Orbiter Summer school will be held in L’Aquila, Italy, September 22-25, 2014.  Information about the school can be found at http://www.cifs-isss.org/

We are now pleased to announce that the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) has kindly agreed to provide support to promote the attendance of UK-based students at this summer school.  We anticipate that this funding will enable us to provide partial support for up to 10 students at a level of about £500 per student.

The fee for the summer school (which includes course fees, accommodation and food) is 700 Euros (~£570), and travel to l’Aquila will need to be found in addition to this.  However, it seems likely that these UKSA awards could be used to cover well in excess of 50% of the overall cost of attending the summer school.

We anticipate that there may be some demand for these awards, and unfortunately time is a little short to sort out their dispersal, since registration for the school closes on June 15th.  We would be grateful if interested students could send us a short letter of application before 5pm on Friday 6th June.  The application should be sent to Prof. Chris Owen (c.owen@ucl.ac.uk) and provide the students name, supervisors name, Department/University, a short (<0.5 page) case on how attendance at the summer school could benefit their current studies and/or fit with future career aspirations, together with a statement of how the remaining costs of the school will be met (please provide the name of the authorising individual at your institute as appropriate).

We will attempt to convene an impartial panel to assess applications as necessary and publish the results of this exercise ahead of the registration deadline.  In the meantime, students might like to note that the registration for the school can be made through the website http://www.cifs-isss.org/application.asp.

Best Wishes,

Chris Owen, Louise Harra, Tim Horbury, Andrejz Fludra (UK leads for the SWA, EUI, MAG and SPICE instrument teams on Solar Orbiter).
