Job Title: PDRA in Solar Physics
Salary: Grade 7 (GBP28,401-34,895 pa)
Closing Date: 20th September 2012
The Solar Physics and Space Plasma Research Centre (SP2RC) within the School of Mathematics & Statistics, University of Sheffield is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to undertake cutting-edge research into solar atmosphere physics with Professor R. Erdélyi (Head of SP2RC) and other members.
The work of SP2RC is at the forefront of addressing theoretical and observational issues in solar physics. The Centre is one of the largest and most dynamic solar physics research groups in the country and is well renowned internationally. Information about the group is available online at http://sp2rc.group.shef.ac.uk/index.htm
The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to a broad programme of research involving the application of plasma-astrophysics and magnetohydrodynamics theory and observations to problems in solar magneto-seismology and solar atmospheric physics. The current programme, funded by a Consolidated Grant of STFC, is focused on to explore the small-scale structure and dynamics of the magnetised solar atmosphere and their relation to atmospheric heating. The Postdoctoral Researcher will emphasise leadership of research into solar MHD waves and oscillations, solar magneto-seismology from photosphere to corona, and solar atmospheric heating.
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent (or equivalent experience) and demonstrable experience of research in solar physics, MHD, astrophysics or a related field. The post-holder will possess excellent theoretical and/or a high standard of computational skills with an open mind towards carrying out solar observations and data analysis. Knowledge of IDL is desirable. This post is available on a fixed-term contract from 1 November 2012 to 31 March 2015.
For informal enquiries applicants may contact Prof Robertus Erdelyi (email: robertus [at] sheffield.ac.uk or tel.: +44-114-222383).
