Research Associate: Lancaster University

A *Research Associate* vacancy has arisen in the Physics Department at
Lancaster University, UK.

=================================================================
Closing Date: Sunday 04 December 2011
Interview Date: Wednesday 21 December 2011
Reference: A321

Applications are invited for a short-term position which has arisen in
the Space Plasma Environment and Radio Science (SPEARS) group at
Lancaster University. The post is fully funded by the UK STFC (Science
and Technology Funding Council) for a period of 10 months.

ACCELERATION AND LOSS PROCESSES AT RELATIVISTIC ENERGIES – Measured
fluxes in the Earth’s radiation belts fluctuate rapidly over many orders
of magnitude. Although the radiation belt response is known to be
correlated with solar wind parameters, the complex interplay between the
various source and loss processes within the belts is not understood in
detail.

You will work on study of the Earth’s radiation belts, source and loss
processes within the belts, and the underlying physical mechanisms
responsible. In particular, it is envisaged that the project will
address if and how relativistic radiation belt particles may be
precipitated into the upper atmosphere, and possible subsequent effects.

You should hold (or shortly expect to be awarded) a Ph.D. in a relevant
field. Previous experience in the above areas will be an advantage.
Salary will be pro-rata within the range £25101-£29099 per year
depending on previous experience.
