Research Fellow in Solar Magnetohydrodynamics

Research Fellow in Solar Magnetohydrodynamics (Fixed-term for 3 years)

Northumbria University and University of Dundee

Salary: £33,242 – £34,572

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in the area of Solar Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The successful candidate will conduct research relevant to understanding how stored energy can be released from magnetised plasmas via time-dependent, wave-generating magnetic reconnection. This position is funded by a research project grant from The Leverhulme Trust and you will work primarily with Dr James McLaughlin (Northumbria University, PI of grant) and Dr David Pontin (University of Dundee, Co-I of grant).

The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of MHD and will have extensive experience in either one or both of the following: (i) computational MHD simulations and code development, (ii) mathematical modelling of magnetised plasmas. Experience in magnetic reconnection and/or solar physics observations would also be beneficial. Applicants must hold a PhD in solar physics, plasma physics, applied mathematics or a relevant discipline by the start of the project.

The successful candidate will be hosted primarily at Northumbria University for the first 24 months and then hosted primarily at University of Dundee in the final 12 months, in order to benefit from the research environments at both institutions.
