I am a lecturer Mathematics and researcher in Solar Physics at the University of Dundee. My research focusses on simulations and observations of solar magnetic fields from the lower limit of our current observational capability to global scales. I have been active in Solar Physics for 17 years, as a PhD student and postdoc at the University of St Andrews, then lecturer at Abertay University and the University of Dundee.
One of the things I love about being part of the field of Solar Physics is how friendly and inclusive I have found the community. I enjoy working collaboratively with others, from research projects and writing funding applications, to meeting organisation and public outreach events. Most recently, I have been working with observers on projects involving EUV observations from PROBA2/SWAP and global coronal magnetic field simulations; EUI observations from Solar Orbiter and small-scale magnetic field simulations; and with researchers in Computer Vision for solar feature detection.
- As a staff member on the UKSP council for the past 3 years, I have:
Co-organised and co-chaired the UKSP general and business sessions at the last 3 National Astronomy Meetings (NAM), as well as stand-alone UKSP meetings. - Proposed speakers for solar-related plenary talks at NAM and decided with my fellow council-members which names to put forward to the NAM organising committee.
- Assisted the UKSP Chair in arguing for a sufficient number of UKSP-related sessions at each NAM, and to minimise the number of these sessions running in parallel.
- Judged talks and posters for the UKSP early career prizes at NAM.
- Promoted the use of the UKSP Zoom license, in particular for groups to share their seminars with the UKSP community.
I would be delighted to support the UKSP community as part of the council for another term. I would continue to bring to this role my passion for the field, my collaborative organisational and communication skills, and my expertise as a mid-career academic.
