PhD studentship in Space Plasma Physics at Lancaster University

PhD studentship in Space Plasma Physics

Physics Department, Lancaster University, UK.

The Space Plasma Environment and Radio Science Group at Lancaster University is pleased to offer a PhD studentship funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Lancaster University is approaching its 50th anniversary and has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in research and teaching. The Physics Department was ranked top in the UK Research Assessment Exercise 2008 and is judged to be one of the UK’s best teaching departments.

Current research in the SPEARS group focuses on the space environment from the surface of the Sun to the upper atmosphere of the Earth and other planets. The group comprises 4 academics, 6 research associates and 6 PhD students. We develop and deploy state-of-the-art experiments in the UK and inside the Arctic and Antarctic circles. These experiments, along with measurements from the latest international space missions, allow us to study the detailed physics of plasma interactions within our solar system. This studentship will be supervised by Prof. Jim Wild in the area of magnetospheric plasma physics and solar wind-magnetosphere coupling.

This 3.5 year studentship includes university fees and a maintenance stipend (£13,726 tax free for 2013-14) is available to individuals with established UK residency. Candidates from EU countries other than the UK are generally eligible for an award restricted to the payment of tuition fees only. Full eligibility criteria and further details can be found on the STFC website at http://www.stfc.ac.uk/565.aspx). Applicants must already have, or be expecting to achieve, a good honours degree (at least 2:1) in physics or a related subject by summer 2013.

Enquiries should be directed to Prof. Jim Wild (http://www.physics.lancs.ac.uk/people/jim-wild). For further information about how to apply, including downloadable application forms and online applications, please visit http://www.physics.lancs.ac.uk/study_here/postgraduate/how-to-apply.

There is no fixed deadline. The studentship will be filled when suitable candidate is identified.
