Decision on Solar-C mission concept

Following an intensive review, JAXA have announced that ‘Plan B’ has been selected as the option for the Solar-C mission concept (launch date ~2018). Plan B is a high resolution spectroscopic mission to study the solar atmosphere. A European contribution to Plan B has been proposed under the name LEMUR (Large European Module for solar Ultraviolet Research) in the European Space Agency’s M3 call for mission proposals last year.

More information on Solar-C Plan B can be found in the interim report here:

http://hinode.nao.ac.jp/SOLAR-C/index_e.html

Studies of the ‘Plan A’ mission (an out-of-ecliptic helioseismology observatory) will continue to be prepared as Solar-D, a future Japanese solar mission with a proposed launch in mid-2020’s.… continue to the full article

Two PhD Studentships in Solar System Physics at Aberystwyth University

The Solar System Physics Group at Aberystwyth University’s Department of Physics invites applications for two 3-year STFC-funded PhD studentships, commencing in October 2011.

Energy and matter emerge from the Sun and flow through our heliosphere, interacting with planetary atmospheres and surfaces, powering many of the processes which shape our world and define the planetary environment we live in. The Solar System Physics Group, part of the Institute of Maths and Physics (IMAPS) at Aberystwyth, studies this single system from the development of eruptive features on the Sun, through the evolution and structure of material in the solar wind, and the impact of this flow on the environments of the planets. This science exploitation goes hand in hand with a programme of solar system exploration, and we also research the robotic and imaging technology for future missions that will dramatically improve their science return.

The studentships provide resources to cover university fees plus a tax-free stipend. Applicants should hold (or expect to achieve) a first or upper-second class MPhys or BSc honours degree in physics or a related subject by the summer of 2011. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate established UK residency (for more information see
http://www.stfc.ac.uk/Funding+and+Grants/12020.aspx#Residence).

For more information please contact the Department at imaps@aber.ac.uk or the Postgraduate Admissions Office (pg-admissions@aber.ac.uk) as soon as possible, to make informal enquiries prior to submitting an application.

Aberystwyth University’s online application system and application forms are available at
http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/postgrad/howtoapply/
Once this formal application is made, suitable candidates will be invited to visit the institute to learn at first hand of the research activities, to meet members of staff and to see the facilities available. The closing date for applications is 30 June 2011, but the process will run throughout this period, so early application is advised.

From Atoms to Stars: call for registration/abstract submission

Our conference “From Atoms to Stars: the impact of spectroscopy on Astrophysics” in celebration of the career of Carole Jordan is now open for registration (deadline 22 June) and we are accepting proposals for contributed talks and posters (deadlines 15 and 22 June, respectively).

For details please visit: http://www.atomstars.org/second/

The conference will celebrate the career of Carole Jordan and the many research fields to which she has contributed. There will be a three day science program covering topics including: multi-wavelength quantitative astrophysical spectroscopy; spectroscopic plasma diagnostics; molecular spectroscopy in cool star atmospheres; the solar atmosphere; chromospheres, coronae and winds of late-type stars.

The meeting has been generously sponsored by the Royal Astronomical Society and will be held in the Physics Department, University of Oxford with a banquet at Somerville College, Oxford on the evening of 27th July, 2011.

Solar Monitoring workshop at Harwell, 18 May

Dear colleagues,

A UK workshop on solar monitoring will held on the Harwell campus on 18 May. The event is being jointly organised by British Interplanetary Society, the International Space Innovation Centre and RAL Space. The objective of the workshop is to highlight the increasing risks from space weather, to illustrate what monitoring systems are already in place and discuss the concepts available for increased future resilience against space weather caused by major solar events. The workshop is timely given the advances made by NASA’s STEREO mission, which has had major UK participation, and the strong interest in future UK-US collaboration on space weather.

For further details of the meeting including registration and a draft programme, please see http://tinyurl.com/67heevy.

Best wishes,
Mike
